Regional Science City, Lucknow, is a constituent unit of the National Council of Science Museums (NCSM), an autonomous body under the Ministry of Culture, Government of India. It functions under the administrative control of the National Science Centre, Delhi, the Northern Zonal Headquarters of NCSM, and stands today as one of the leading centres of informal science education in Northern India.
The foundation of this institution was laid with the vision of promoting scientific temper and creating a vibrant centre for science communication in Uttar Pradesh. Initially established as the Regional Science Centre, Lucknow, it was dedicated to the nation on 7 September 1989 by the then Hon’ble Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Shri N. D. Tiwari, in the august presence of Smt. Krishna Sahi, Minister of State, Department of Culture, Government of India. This marked an important milestone in bringing interactive science learning to the people of the state.
Over the years, with growing public participation and increasing demand for modern science education facilities, the centre expanded its activities and infrastructure. In recognition of its progress and potential, it was upgraded as Regional Science City, Lucknow and dedicated to the nation on 21 September 2007 by Shri Nakul Dubey, Hon’ble Minister of Culture, Urban Development, Shahri Samaggra Vikas, Institutional Finance, Trade Tax, Entertainment Tax and Environment, Government of Uttar Pradesh, in the presence of Shri Ingit Mukherjee, Director General, National Council of Science Museums, Ministry of Culture, Government of India.
A modern and aesthetically designed new wing was added amidst the lush green surroundings of the Science Park. This expansion introduced three large thematic galleries Underwater Exploration, Biotechnological Revolution, and Being Human along with state-of-the-art facilities such as the large-format SCIMAX Theatre, 3-D Science Show, and a wide range of interactive exhibits designed to make science engaging, enjoyable and accessible to all age groups.
Spread across a 10-acre campus with a built-up area of approximately 8,640 square metres, the Science City combines education with recreation through galleries, outdoor exhibits, science parks and experiential learning spaces. It has emerged as a favourite destination for school groups, families, students, teachers and tourists alike.
The institution has continuously organised science demonstrations, innovation workshops, hobby camps, teacher training programmes, sky observation sessions, mobile science exhibitions, National Science Day celebrations and outreach programmes in both urban and rural areas. Through these sustained efforts, it has played a significant role in nurturing curiosity, scientific thinking and creativity among lakhs of young minds.
Today, more than 4.5 lakh visitors annually benefit from its galleries, shows and educational programmes, while over 60 lakh visitors have visited the centre since its inception. Thus, Regional Science City, Lucknow stands as a successful outcome of NCSM’s vision to establish a premier science communication hub in the state capital, continuing to inspire generations through the spirit of discovery and innovation.
